Topic clusters and pillar pages: build topical authority

Why grouping keywords into clusters beats one-keyword-per-page, and how to plan pillar pages and supporting articles.

Search engines understand topics, not just strings of words. A site that covers a subject thoroughly — with a clear main page and in-depth supporting content — tends to rank for hundreds of related queries. That structure is called a topic cluster.

Keywords → clusters

Start with all the terms people use for your subject: your own pages' titles and headings, Search Console queries, autocomplete suggestions and keyword tools. Group terms that a single page could satisfy — usually because they share intent and Google shows similar results for them. “email marketing software”, “best email marketing tools” and “email marketing platforms” belong together; “how to write a welcome email” is its own cluster.

The pillar + spokes model

  • Pillar page: a comprehensive page for the head term (for example, “Email marketing software”) that introduces every subtopic.
  • Supporting articles: focused pages that answer one question in depth (“How to choose an email provider for e-commerce”, “Email deliverability checklist”).
  • Links: every supporting article links to the pillar with a descriptive anchor, and the pillar links out to each article.

Prioritising clusters

Score each cluster on business value (does it lead to customers?), opportunity (search volume and current position) and effort (difficulty and how much content exists). Clusters where you already rank on page two are often the fastest wins.

Common mistakes

  • Several pages targeting the same cluster (keyword cannibalisation).
  • Pillar pages that are just lists of links with no real content.
  • Supporting articles that never link back to the pillar.
  • Clusters built only on volume, ignoring intent.

How BoostSEO helps

The audit extracts the keywords each page targets, groups them into clusters, finds your pillar page (or notes that one is missing) and lists tailored tasks per cluster: create a pillar, add supporting articles, interlink, fix cannibalisation, add FAQs or schema, or push near-page-one topics.
