GEO

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of optimizing your website so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Copilot — can crawl it, understand it and quote it as a source in their answers.

GEO in one paragraph

Classic SEO helps a page rank in a list of ten blue links. AI answer engines work differently: they retrieve a handful of passages from pages they can access, combine them into one answer and sometimes cite the sources. To be part of that answer, your page must be reachable by the AI crawler, readable without JavaScript, structured in short self-contained passages, factual, and clearly attributed to a trustworthy author or organization.

GEO checklist: 10 things to do

  1. Let AI crawlers in

Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot. Block training bots only if you mean to — blocking search bots removes you from their answers.

  2. Publish llms.txt

A short Markdown file at /llms.txt that summarises who you are and links to your key pages helps assistants understand your site.

  3. Render content in HTML

Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your text only appears after scripts run, they see an empty page.

  4. Answer first

Start each section with a direct 40–60 word answer, then add detail. These passages are the easiest to quote.

  5. Use question headings

Phrase H2/H3 headings as the questions people ask and answer them right below.

  6. Add statistics and sources

Concrete numbers with a source make your content more quotable. Never invent data.

  7. Show who wrote it

Author names, bios, dates and an About page are trust signals for people, Google and AI models.

  8. Describe entities with schema

Organization, Person, Product, Article, FAQPage and sameAs links connect your brand to known entities.

  9. Keep it fresh

Update key pages and show the modified date — assistants prefer current information.

  10. Measure AI visibility

Ask assistants the questions your customers ask and track whether you are mentioned.

How to measure GEO

Watch referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in your analytics, track impressions for question-type queries in Search Console, and test prompts regularly. BoostSEO Pro runs those prompts across OpenAI, Gemini and Claude and reports your share of mentions.

No tool can guarantee a citation by an AI model — answers change with every model update. GEO improves your chances by making your content accessible, clear and trustworthy.

GEO questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answer engines rely heavily on pages that already rank and are crawlable. GEO builds on solid SEO and adds structure, evidence and AI crawler access.

Should I block GPTBot?

GPTBot collects training data; OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are used for ChatGPT search and browsing. You can block training while allowing search bots — BoostSEO shows each bot's status.

Does llms.txt improve rankings?

It is a young, voluntary standard. It costs little, helps assistants that read it and documents your key pages; BoostSEO can generate one for you.

How long does GEO take?

Technical fixes (crawler access, llms.txt, schema) work as soon as bots revisit your site. Content changes usually show in AI answers after the next crawl, often within weeks.
